History: WPA Built Course
Golf courses are measured in yards. The Rabun County Golf Club is 2,639 yards long. However the true "measure” of this course is in the character of its people. The course was built in the mist of the great economic depression of the 1930’s. Rabun County citizens provided the seed money to supplement President Roosevelt’s’ offer that the Works Projects Administration build a recreational facility for tourists and citizens.
The “Rabun Country Club" (its original name) opened on July 4th, 1940; citizens and tourists immediately fell in love with the magnificent resort consisting of a WPA built swimming pool, outdoor pavilion, clay tennis courts and a 9- hole golf course. Today fortunately the 9-hole golf course and the pavilion (now enclosed) still remain.
The Rabun County Country Club has a very special place in the hearts of Rabun County citizens. As young children and teenagers, it was the place for a good time swimming and playing tennis. Generations of boys learned the game of golf from their fathers. Now the grandchildren – both boys and girls are enjoying golf as well. It was a joy at the last PARS Free Youth Clinic to see proud dads and moms watching their children become excited about learning golf.
Thanks to collaboration of the Rabun County and Clayton City elected officials, the golf course is receiving funds to enable it to return it to the jewel it was upon opening day in 1940. PARS, the non-profit citizens group spearheading the course’s revitalization is researching the history of the many families who created and maintained the Club. Plans are in place to pay tribute to the Club founders via historical markers, historical guidebooks and posted photographs of Rabun Countyians whose character made the County Club a reality over 66 years ago.
